The prevalence of Drug and Substance abuse has reached unprecedented levels in Zimbabwe with figures showing that more than 50% of the young generation is using drugs and alcohol.

We have joined forces with the Faith in God Ministries Family Institution team together with rehabilitation Specialists around Zimbabwe with the goal to sensitize leaders across provinces on how to alleviate drug and substance abuse among the youth in the church.

OUR MISSION:

  1. Inculcate (instill) through God’s word, godly living within families.
  2. Fight through knowledge dissemination and prayer, all social ills bedeviling (cause great and continual trouble) young people: e.g drug abuse, alcohol abuse, sex perversions etc
  3. Create platforms in which married couples interact, sharing experiences that benefit all.
  4. Foster a culture of education and hard work in families.

Elderly Care & Support

Our work revolves around the ideology and belief that the elderly are to be cherished. To us, our elderly are not only carriers of a wealth of life experiences, but they are also key to the passing on of cultures and traditions that can easily be lost across generations. Unfortunately, in many parts of developed countries across the globe, old age has become more of a curse. All around the globe we have experienced cases of elderly people living a life that is not desirable for many, simply because they are old. With age comes diseases of various kinds, incapacitating an individual to the extent that they become vulnerable and a ‘burden’ to many. To add insult to injury, most of our elderly do not have support systems that can assist them with a good quality of life. As OPHTI, we have dedicated our entire existence to improving the quality of life for our elderly populations. We do this by running the following programs:

  • #VatanaVedu
Through various partners, we donate clothes, food, blankets, and sanitation materials to improve the daily living conditions of our elderly, both in communities and in institutions. Unlike young people, our elderly require a lot of hygiene and proper food intake to maintain their aging systems in place. We therefore ensure that we donate required food items as well as clothing materials and cleaning equipment to improve their quality of life.
 
  • Free Eye-Care  Outreaches

This initiative is in partnership with eye care specialists who volunteer their facilities and expertise to offer free eye checks and corrective treatment to elderly people in various communities. Since 2018, this program has successfully offered assistance to more than 100 elderly people in Zimbabwe. Elderly people receive free eye checks and spectacles as well, with OPHTI funding any additional costs in corrective operations.

  • Elderly care pooled fund

 As humans age, their systems become vulnerable to a lot of medical conditions. This should not be something to face alone. We therefore have a pooled fund where we raise money from corporates, individuals, families, ministries etc., set aside to aid our elderly who medical conditions that they or those who care for them cannot afford. The ultimate goal is to ensure that our elderly live out their lives in peace and joy, not suffering from conditions that can be treated.

The environment in which anyone spends their time has a bearing on their health, both emotional, physical, and mental health. Some of the elderly people we have come across have conditions that require special facilities in order for them to be able to function. Our elderly care homes in developing countries may not be able to offer such comfort and convenience. Some of our beneficiaries require special types of beds, ablution facilities, feeding utensils, and these come at a cost. As an organization, we also dedicate our resources to scaling-up facilities that our elderly dwell in, our goal being to improve their health and mental states through building a positive environment that is conducive for various medical conditions.

STUDY REVOLUTION

In Africa efforts are being made to improve access to education for children in underprivileged situation or society Zimbabwe has no exception. Since 2020 we have been working to improve not only access to education but access to facilities that enhance the education experience for orphans and vulnerable children. For years, education has been the tipping point for individuals to transcend their limitations. The advent of great charitable organisation has made it possible for gifted and hard working children to have access to opportunities they could not have imagined before. Our work in supporting orphans and vulnerable children is not only in ensuring they also access educational opportunities, but we also work to ensure that our beneficiaries are equipped to enjoy their educational journey. The Study Revolution program therefore aims to provide beneficiaries with stationery, satchels, and study packs.

We work with various individuals and organizations to purchase and donate all relevant equipment for our beneficiaries to participate fully in their educational endeavours. 

We make use of Community Based Volunteers who assist us in identifying orphans within the community who we support through this program. It is very possible to have children frustrated and failing even though their tuition fees are paid for as a result of lacking adequate learning equipment. Therefore, we aim to close that gap through the Study Revolution Program.

Orphans, Disabled children, vulnerable children affected by medical conditions such as HIV/AIDS, child-headed families children who are victims of abuse, children staying in underprivileged societies, victims of natural disaster.

PROGRAM INITIATIVIES

  • We donate food, medication, physical aids, and clothing wear, sanitation material etc.
  • We give scholarships, purchasing of scholastic material. 
  • Scale-up orphanage e.g building, upgrading, or renovating infrastructure, drilling boreholes and installation of water storage tanks.
  • Empowerment sessions around key issues such as abuse, career guidance etc. 
  • Social visits to orphans

  • Celebrations e.g. Christmas parties, birthday parties.

Youths Against Substance Abuse (YASA)

The Youth Advocates Zimbabwe study (2023) revealed some of the following disturbing patterns directly attributable to Alcohol Drug and Substance Abuse (ADS) abuse: 70% of gang violence is among school children; 40% of suicide attempts are linked to ADS abuse; and an increase in school dropouts with 60% having dropped out of school after being expelled for ADS abuse. Consumption of alcohol, drugs and other substances starts as early as adolescence. While the youngest user in the Zimbabwe Civil Liberties and Drug Network (ZCLDN) study was 14 years old, the median age of first drug use was 18 years old. Amongst the root causes of ADS abuse, one major cause cited was lack of adequate knowledge on ADS abuse. Since 2023, Operation Hope Trust International has been moving around targeted communities in Zimbabwe to train caregivers, community and church leaders, as well as youths and teens on various issues around ADS in an effort to reduce, and eventually eradicate, cases of ADS-related societal ills. Substance abuse within schools has been rife, leading to negative peer influence, an overwhelming amount of stress, and the ready availability of drugs in institutions of learning. It is essential to tackle this problem by providing educational initiatives, prevention programs, and support services for students facing challenges, creating a more supportive and healthy environment. According to a report by the Zimbabwe National Council for the Welfare of Children, approximately 40% of students in secondary schools have experimented with drugs, while 15% are regular users.

 

The campaigns, dubbed Youths Against Substance Abuse (YASA), are in response to the lack of adequate knowledge on effective ADS abuse management within communities. We seek to empower and educate stakeholders on the different ways to manage ADS abuse cases, from identification of possible abuse to the rehabilitation of an individual until they are reintegrated into society. The objective is to increase the knowledge of ADS abuse within communities until there is a marked reduction of ADS abuse amongst our target populations. The YASA program uses 3 approaches to deliver tailor-made sessions to various audiences:

 

1.    Informative sessions (where we sensitize groups on ADS abuse)

 

2.  Individual Deficit Model (where we empower our audience to internalize information delivered, training them to deal with the risk factors of ADS abuse at an individual level through various highly interactive sessions)


3.    Social Influence (where we equip leaders and societies to effectively manage ADS abuse cases by providing an enabling environment for positive choices and rehabilitation)

We are working in collaboration with mental health experts, leaders of rehabilitation centers, community leaders, heads of churches, and school heads in Zimbabwe to achieve our goal. Early intervention is key, and a comprehensive program will empower individuals to recognize the signs of addiction and seek help before it becomes a pervasive and destructive force. The establishment of the YASA Program is not merely a response to a crisis; it is an imperative for the well-being and resilience of our community. It is a beacon of hope, a testament to our commitment to the individuals and families affected by substance abuse, and a catalyst for positive, enduring change. By investing in such a program, we invest in the restoration of lives, the strength of our community, and the promise of a healthier, more vibrant future for all.
